Telfair Wheeler Airport Authority
THE POWER LINES ARE DOWN – FINALLY!!!!!
The Telfair Wheeler Airport runway extension is now open.

On May 5, 2010 Georgia Power notified the airport authority that they had completed the relocation of their 46kV transmission line. The full runway of 5000 feet can now be used.

This project began in 2000 with preliminary studies and plans. On August 10, 2006, officials of both counties met with FAA and GaDOT to begin the actual work of the project. Final negotiations were completed, necessary permits were obtained and after two more years on August 18, 2006 the actual "Notice to Proceed" was issued to Folsom Construction, the low bidder for phase one of the construction project. Phase one was completed in December of 2008 and the completion of Phase two in 2009 was made possible by funds from ARRA.

Phase three of the project was the relocation of the Georgia Power 46kV transmission line at the North end of the runway. Funds for this project were obtained from a grant from OneGeorgia, local matching funds and Georgia Power.

Head of Georgia Power, Mike Garrett had made a commitment at the Telfair County Chamber Banquet in 2006 to help his hometown in economic endeavors. He, along with help from other local citizens in both Telfair and Wheeler counties who volunteered their time and efforts, made the completion of this project possible.
