Jeff Mcghee was in charge of the program on November 1, 2011. He introduced Joe Elton of the City of McRae. Joe gave an overview of McRae Rotary's website that he had just completed. Mr. Abney also discussed upcoming events.

Robert Gibson introduced Michael Brewer from the Telfair County Sheriff’s office, who has a two year old drug dog that is used to enhance the department’s power.  The dog in one year has been responsible for 200 drug cases.  Fifty of those have been felony cases.  Often Leah gets out of the car and assists Michael.  He can sniff drugs as small as a grain of salt.  Leah is certified and his handler always uses gloves.  The dog wears rubber tips on his nails to keep from scratching the cars. The dog will also be used in school searches.  Leah was brought in and demonstrated her skills for Rotarians. Leah is trained every day and has one day per week training in Waycross.

Dr. Howard Abney, President of Rotary Club, announced that the club had been awarded a District Simplified Grant.  Debbie Bullard introduced Craig Wilson who has been in the timber industry all his life.  He spoke on a company he owns located in Lumber City.  His company is located on 53 acres and produces shavings (horse bedding). It is a seasonal business and primarily has a market in foreign countries.  Recently he added a fuel pellet facility.  A mill is being installed and this will add thirty new jobs, and increase the production of shavings.   They currently supply 140,000 metric tons of pellets per year. He hopes in the net two to three years to have a full blown wood facility which will bring about an impact on the price of timber.

October 4, 2011 Rotary Meeting

Chad Puckett presented Peggy Rhodes with AIR EVAC.  She presented a very informative program.  It was on Air Ambulances.  They have one hundred five bases in fifteen states.  Georgia has seven helicopters.  Among their locations are Cordele, Dublin and Vidalia.  She discussed the Golden Hour which is the first hour after a critical attack, or accident.  The Heart Association recommends that patients be transported to a Level 1 Trauma Center.  Helicopters are used and information relayed to the doctor in advance of the patients arrival.  AIR EVAC can be activated by individuals.  Times of the different trips were discussed and Rotarians were urged to join.  AIR EVAC membership offers significant benefits and supports your healthcare needs.

Meeting: September 27, 2011

Laurie Tompson from the Technical College was presented a scholarship, and plans were made to assist State members of the Visitors Center on behalf of the Midland Region.  Mr. George Smith , former warden of several State Prisons and current Director of the Milan YDC was the speaker.  He is delighted with the approximately 150 jobs that the facility provides and appreciates the challenge he faces.  It is a transition facility, and he hopes to change lives.
